Microsoft unveils Maia 300 chip, to make in-house silicon its primary inference system in multi-gigawatt 2027 scale-up
satyanadella · x · 2026-10-12
Satya Nadella announced Microsoft's biggest bet yet on its own silicon:
- Maia 200 in production: deploying across the US, Europe, and Australia, already serving Copilot workloads with up to 1.7x more tokens per watt than GPU-based systems; GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry follow by year-end.
- Maia 300 unveiled: delivers 40% more tokens per watt than leading GPU-based systems, and up to 7x the rack-scale token throughput of Maia 200 in a full 96-accelerator config; production rollout in 2027.
- Starting 2027, the Maia family scales to multi-gigawatt deployments, becoming the primary inference system for Microsoft's own products and services, reducing reliance on Nvidia and AMD GPUs.
