Karpathy: ~6B people have barely touched LLMs while only a few thousand grasp frontier capabilities
minchoi · x · 2026-10-12
Karpathy revisited his April tweet, arguing the gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening into a sharp funnel:
- 6B people (75% of the population) have barely come in contact with LLMs at all;
- 1-2B (20%) are casual users of free-tier ChatGPT-like products, treating them as a better search or writing aid — many non-tech professionals see little use for them;
- Only a few thousand have seen what frontier models can actually do.
He warns the gap grows wider every month and most people have no idea what's coming.
