Google pilots AI-friendly coding interviews with Gemini and a new code comprehension section
机器之心 · wechat · 2026-10-12
Google is piloting a software engineer interview overhaul: candidates can use Gemini during interviews, and a new "Code Comprehension" section tests reading, debugging, and optimizing existing code. Interviewers will assess "AI fluency" — how candidates craft prompts, verify AI output, and take responsibility for results. The pilot covers junior/mid-level roles in US teams including Google Cloud and Platforms & Devices.
Context: Sundar Pichai said 75% of Google's new code is now AI-generated (up from 50% six months ago), and Andrej Karpathy described shifting from 80% hand-written to 80% agent-written code in weeks, noting that generating and reviewing code are distinct skills.
Google isn't first: Canva requires AI tools in interviews with harder open-ended problems, Meta is piloting AI-permitted coding interviews, and Codility now lets interviewers plant hidden instructions so AI writes buggy code to test whether candidates actually review output.
