Deno open-sources celld: self-hosted distributed Durable Objects without a consensus cluster
bibryam · x · 2026-10-12
Deno released celld (Apache-2.0, 5.5k stars), a daemon that runs Cloudflare Workers apps on your own machines — Workers, Durable Objects, KV, Queues, D1, R2, Workflows and Cron Triggers, deployed from your existing wrangler..
Key design:
- Each Durable Object is a "cell": a named server with its own SQLite DB running a V8 worker
- Long-term state lives in S3-compatible/GCS/Azure Blob storage; conditional-write ownership with leases and epoch fencing; nodes can claim and restore objects
- No separate control plane or consensus service; idle cells cost almost nothing
Early-stage but a clever way to self-host the Durable Objects model.
