Grid becomes AI's new bottleneck: Entergy warned Amazon of peak-time cutoffs, AWS built Project Falcon
kimmonismus · x · 2026-10-12
The Information reports that Mississippi utility Entergy told Amazon it would start cutting its data centers off the grid at peak times — a previously unreported warning that pushed AWS to change how those sites switch to backup power.
Amazon's answer is Project Falcon: the utility can now switch sites to backup power on its own, without contacting AWS. Built for Mississippi, Falcon may roll out elsewhere in the U.S. As Synergetic CEO Mike Sloan put it, data centers "have to accept some curtailment," meaning they need a toolbox that can handle that risk.
