Karpathy: The LLM Perception Gap Is a Sharp Funnel — 75% of People Have Barely Touched LLMs
ZeroStateReflex · x · 2026-10-12
Karpathy revisited his April tweet, arguing the public gap in understanding LLM capability has sharpened into a funnel:
- 6B people (75%) have barely come in contact with LLMs
- 1-2B (20%) are casual free-tier users who see a better Google search or writing aid
- A tiny sliver using advanced models heavily for coding and math experience capability going near-vertical
The screenshot adds the funnel's drivers: impact scales with ambition and problem size; capability peaks in digital, verifiable, economically valuable domains (RL on verifiable rewards, revenue-curated environments); plus access tiers (free/paid/internal).
kimmonismus adds that people in Paris were unaware OpenAI solved a Millennium Prize problem and recently solved 372 math problems, some unsolved for decades. Karpathy's point: most professionals still see only modest uplift while a small group feels the vertigo of the curve — all happening at the same time, and the gap is widening.
