Karpathy: 6 billion barely touched LLMs as AI understanding narrows into a sharp funnel
CurieuxExplorer · x · 2026-10-12
Karpathy revisited his earlier observation: the gap in how people understand current AI is no longer two groups talking past each other—it has become a sharp funnel.
- 6 billion people have barely touched LLMs
- 1-2 billion are casual free-tier users who see basic chatbots for search or light writing
- 20 million professionals (especially math and code) watch agents complete multi-week projects from a single prompt
- At the tip, only a few thousand people inside labs see swarms of agents working for weeks on research, zero-days, or new science
The jaggedness comes from reinforcement learning on verifiable rewards (code tests, math proofs) plus economic incentives—progress is fastest where results can be automatically checked and sold to enterprises. The domains where AI already outruns human review are exactly the ones with automatic scoring; everywhere else still looks like a slightly better search bar.
