CLI vs GUI: DeepSeek's desktop Harness and the end of the terminal-only Agent dream
APPSO · wechat · 2026-10-12
A look back at the "CLI for AI, GUI for humans" debate. Through 2025, Claude Code, Gemini CLI and Codex CLI made the terminal seem like the natural home for agents — structured text, system access, cheap tokens. But the pendulum swung: OpenAI shipped a Codex desktop app, Zed proposed the Agent Client Protocol, and now DeepSeek has released a desktop Harness with sessions, plugins, workspaces and file previews while keeping the terminal available. A study of 440 desktop tasks found the best GUI agent at 59.1% completion vs 48.2% for CLI tools, rising to 69.3% when CLI agents were given richer command skills — agent capability depends on what entry points software exposes. The verdict: GUI never lost; interfaces are shifting from operating to supervising parallel agents.
