Weather map tool shows California coast has your best weather — fork it to "moneyball" cities
alex_peys · x · 2026-10-12
theojaffee built a tool visualizing where in the world your favorite weather occurs most often (the California coast), and where any given date is most likely to have it, using Open-Meteo ERA5 data (2016–2025) with "nice day" defined as highs of 60–82°F, rain <1mm, wind <25mph, normalized to Palo Alto.
alexpeys forked the code to add a portfolio feature: splitting the year across cities (e.g., Jan–Apr in one, Apr–Aug in another) to see if you can beat Palo Alto on total nice days. Verdict: hard to beat the Bay Area if cost doesn't matter, but pairing Austin + Pacific Northwest yields an optimal nice-days-per-dollar combo — the chart shows an 0.86 nice-day index at just 0.21x Palo Alto's blended cost of living. Code is on GitHub for forking.
