Karpathy: ~75% of world barely touched LLMs, and the capability-awareness gap is widening
eldonredwards · x · 2026-10-12
Karpathy resurfaced his April tweet arguing the gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening into a sharp funnel: roughly 6B people (75% of the world) have barely touched LLMs, while 1-2B casual free-tier users treat them as a better search or writing aid. Ethan Mollick adds that even the 5,000 lab insiders with frontier model access mostly confine them to cybersecurity, math, and AI R&D. Both frontiers and mass adoption leave vast capability headroom untouched.
