Karpathy: only ~5,000 people have access to frontier internal AI systems
机器之心 · wechat · 2026-10-12
Karpathy estimates only 5,000 people can access frontier internal AI systems, while 6 billion have barely touched an LLM. He lays out a 'capability funnel': 75% of the world untouched by LLMs; 1-2 billion occasional free-tier users seeing only clumsy chatbots; 20 million math/coding professionals who've watched agents complete weeks-long projects from a single prompt; and the top 0.00006% seeing agent swarms run for weeks, find zero-days, and push science and math frontiers (e.g. 722 frontier math manuscripts still awaiting human review).
He attributes the funnel to three factors: ordinary users lack problems big enough to extract full capability; RLVR training concentrates capability in verifiable, commercially valuable domains like math and coding; and tiered access (free/paid/internal). Capability is racing ahead at frontier labs, but societal penetration lags far behind.
