OpenAI bumps GPT-6.1 Sol default context to 500k in Codex and Work, up ~80% from 272k

OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux announced that the default context length for GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and ChatGPT Work has been raised from 272k to 500k, an 80% increase.
According to the team, the new default was carefully tested as the sweet spot for most users: it reduces compaction events and helps tasks that need to retain lots of context and nuance over time. Users can still override it, the maximum context length remains 1M, and OpenAI says the default will go higher in the future.
