Karpathy: ~75% of humanity has barely touched LLMs as the capability-awareness gap widens
daniel_mac8 · x · 2026-10-12
Andrej Karpathy revisited his April tweet, arguing the gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening — no longer two groups talking past each other but a sharp funnel.
His napkin math:
- 6B people (75% of the population) have barely come in contact with LLMs at all;
- 1-2B (20%) are casual, infrequent users of free-tier ChatGPT-like products.
The implication: the divide between what power users see and what the general public believes about these models keeps growing, fueling much of the public disagreement about AI.
