The real London Bridge — a granite span crossing the Thames since 1831 — was sinking under modern traffic by the 20th century. London sold it in April 1968 for $2.46 million to American industrialist Robert McCulloch, who rebuilt it block by block at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to draw tourists. It was re-inaugurated there on October 10, 1971, 55 years ago.
