Fields medallist Hugo Duminil-Copin said OpenAI's release of 700+ AI-generated mathematical manuscripts — including work on 16 questions directly relevant to his research — left him deeply shaken: "On Tuesday night, I cried, and it woke up my daughter" and "They have annihilated my field of research."
Ramez Naam responded with compassion for researchers whose life work has been overtaken, but argued "mathematics isn't a jobs program for mathematicians" — advances in math are good regardless of source, and the field must adapt.
