Databricks Genie App Builder enters Beta: natural-language data apps with governance and scale-to-zero

Databricks quietly moved Genie App Builder into Beta (enable under Previews as "Governed agentic app-building"), first announced at the June Data + AI Summit.

What it is: an agent inside the Databricks UI that builds full data apps from natural language—describe the app, get a working preview, refine with follow-ups, deploy. It's data-aware via Unity Catalog (tables, metrics, permissions), and apps are generated with Databricks' TypeScript framework AppKit.

How it differs from regular Databricks Apps:

Pricing/availability: free during Beta, several AWS/Azure regions, no GCP yet.

The bigger vision: non-technical business users build governed internal tools—fast builds, cheap scale-to-zero runs for sporadic use cases, central governance—plus embedded Genie Spaces/agents for conversational apps out of the box, and Marketplace as a distribution channel. Summit demos included a sales QBR assistant, an ops KPI command center, and a daily exec briefing tool.
