OpenAI drops hundreds of AI-generated math papers, Northwestern students question staying in math

OpenAI's single release of hundreds of AI-generated papers on open math problems has shaken the mathematics community. Some Northwestern students are now questioning whether to stay in mathematics at all, as unsolved problems that once served as years-long PhD training projects get scooped by AI.
Northwestern math professor Antonio Auffinger, who uses AI in his own work, says his priority has shifted to retaining and growing human talent in the field. Mathematician Riehl noted that a senior mathematician jumping on a student's thesis problem would violate community norms.
