Hugo Duminil-Copin, 2022 Fields Medallist, was deeply shaken by OpenAI's release of 700+ AI-generated math manuscripts, including 16 questions directly relevant to his research. "On Tuesday night, I cried, and it woke up my daughter... They have annihilated my field of research," he said at a French Mathematical Society videoconference.
Reply threads mocked the reaction with the analogy "cancer researcher devastated by cancer cure," while critics asked who will pose and validate the next generation of real math problems.
