jax-graft: an AI-built JAX backend runs JAX on Apple Silicon GPUs
twiecki · x · 2026-10-12
Astronomer dfm used Claude Opus 5.5 to build jax-graft, an open-source (Apache-2.0) custom backend letting recent JAX versions run on Apple GPUs.
How it works: Metal is exposed as an XLA:GPU platform (called "mtl") alongside CUDA and ROCm. XLA's GPU compiler fuses programs and generates kernels, which the plugin translates into Metal Shading Language. Not affiliated with Apple; the author admits rough edges but says it 'kind of works.'
Notable signal: AI coding assistants can now produce compiler-stack-level systems projects largely on their own.
