Google DeepMind's weather model (FNV3) crushed the forecast for Hurricane Isaias, picking up signal 11 days in advance, locking onto the exact landfall location 4 days before it happened, and consistently nailing peak intensity 3 days out.
Meteorologist packie7b shared track-density visuals from a 1000-member ensemble plus individual tracks from a 50-member ensemble, calling it "a new age of forecasting". In the quoted thread, pfau notes this is exactly the kind of work for humanity AI labs were doing before ChatGPT shifted the industry's focus.
