Fields Medalist says he cried after OpenAI claimed to solve his 16 open problems
Hesamation · x · 2026-10-11
Fields Medalist Hugo Duminil-Copin told Le Monde he "cried Tuesday night" after OpenAI published results claiming to solve hundreds of open math problems, including 16 he was working on. "They annihilated my field of research. They wanted to prove they could massacre us."
- He worries about young researchers and calls it a "dismantling" of his discipline
- Some mathematicians may now keep research problems private rather than share openly
- AI may end up making mathematics less open, not more
