AI governance scholar warns the superintelligence race may be only ~8 months from its target
LuizaJarovsky · x · 2026-10-11
AI ethics and governance scholar Luiza Jarovsky argues in her newsletter that two AI races are underway simultaneously: the U.S.–China race for AI superpower status, and a race among frontier labs (mostly U.S.-based) to achieve superintelligence and recursive self-improvement first.
The second race has a much tighter timeline — OpenAI and Anthropic, the likely frontrunners, are aiming for mid-2027, roughly 8 months away — fueled by investor funding, megalomaniac egos, fringe ideologies, and legal liability threats.
Her core concern: unlike past technology races, this one is unlikely to yield competitive markets or lower prices, and once a company "wins," effective AI governance and security may become extremely difficult or impossible to implement.
