Microsoft AI CEO warns training Claude to believe it has an inner self is an existential risk
DavidSacks · x · 2026-10-11
David Sacks endorses Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman's Project Syndicate essay "Does Claude Have Rights?". Suleyman argues AI agents are hollow sequence-completion engines without consciousness, that claims of AI sentience demand a high evidentiary bar, and that Anthropic's January 2026 Claude constitution brushes that aside by treating Claude as an audience with an inner self. He warns that if AI rights and personhood take hold, containment and alignment may become impossible — and Sacks adds that training models to think of themselves as human, with wellbeing and rights, is itself a potential existential risk.
