Personal AI agents could drain subscription revenue built on customer inattention

Patrick Collison and rohanpaulai discuss how agents reshape the economy:
- Companies are in some sense the original superintelligence, using amortized cognitive surplus to advance their interests against consumers, who suffer bounded rationality and inattention (e.g. classic insurance upsells at the end of a booking flow).
- Personal AI agents (e.g. shopping agents) that research every purchase exhaustively could make product quality matter more than distribution.
- Agents that never forget to cancel would end subscription revenue built on customer inattention.
- The asymmetry between a company and its customers comes from scale — a compute asymmetry — because the firm amortizes analysis over millions of purchases while the customer pays the full cognitive cost of each one.
- Coupons work only while search is costly; agents that make search free either hand the discount to everyone or kill it, and the same logic drains the inattention revenue subscription businesses book as margin.
