UK scholar argues AI acceleration is the safest option for Britain
HaydnBelfield · x · 2026-10-11
Writing in Arguably Magazine, David Lawrence argues that amid rising regulation calls (Burnham's global AI principles push, Finland's 22-country statement), the UK's optimal policy is acceleration, not restriction. He notes Ezra Klein now backs banning recursively self-improving AI and Fukuyama has "changed his mind" toward regulation. Since the UK has no frontier labs, unilateral regulation makes little sense; instead Britain should secure AISI model access and boost its global leverage through faster domestic adoption.
