User builds browser Curta calculator simulator from photos alone with Opus 5.5
timsam · reddit · 2026-10-11
Reddit user timsam used Claude Opus 5.5 to build a working browser-based simulator of the Curta mechanical calculator in a single THREE.js HTML file.
- No CAD model was used — just photos of his own Curta Type I and Type II machines plus prompts; the model also read the user and service manuals at vcalc.net to understand the mechanism
- The initial prompt was simply "look at these photos and create a Curta simulator in HTML with THREE.js," refined through iteration
- The internal mechanism isn't perfect but demonstrates the core idea; a "100 ÷ 7 (subtractive)" button shows it in action
- The HTML file is downloadable for anyone who wants to keep vibecoding on it
