Reddit: Google pulls Gemini 3.1 Pro from Antigravity IDE, leaving devs on Flash
Adventurous-Week-399 · reddit · 2026-10-11
A Reddit user criticizes Google's decision to deprecate Gemini 3.1 Pro in Antigravity IDE.
- DeepMind's newly announced Gemini 4 Argon is still locked behind the Fairwind trusted-tester program and enterprise tiers, so most developers can't use it yet.
- With 3.1 Pro gone, the IDE defaults to Gemini 3.8 Flash. The author argues that bolting "High Thinking" onto a lightweight model doesn't grant pro-tier parametric depth: on real codebases with sprawling dependencies and messy abstractions, 3.8 Flash keeps delivering "draw the rest of the owl" output.
- 3.1 Pro is older and costly to serve, but it actually holds project context together and doesn't cut corners on the hardest 20% of an implementation.
- The ask isn't to stop progress: keep 3.1 Pro behind a "Legacy" toggle, rate-limit it, throttle daily quotas if compute cost is the issue, but don't yank it from the toolchain. Broken boilerplate at 120 tokens/s is useless next to waiting five extra seconds for code that compiles.
