OpenAI's chip trade-off: expose the machine for bandwidth, let AI write kernels
nrehiew_ · x · 2026-10-11
Sharing notes on OpenAI's "jalapeño" in-house chip: the core design trade-off is maximizing effective memory bandwidth by exposing more of the physical machine to software. The cost is much harder-to-write kernels, and OpenAI is betting that AI-assisted kernel generation and search can absorb that complexity.
