Dean Ball on Math Results and Human Achievement, via Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto
deanwball · x · 2026-10-11
Dean Ball sums up his view on math results and what they mean for human accomplishment with a video of teenage violinist Christian Li playing the conclusion of Mendelssohn's violin concerto.
He points to Li's face around 1:10 as he reaches for the high note, the smile a few seconds later, and the determination as he closes out — an analogy for the immersion and sense of completion humans feel when cracking hard problems.
He follows up with "goddamnit we will land this plane," expressing determination to get the thing done.
