AI researcher Dietterich: even if AI designs the drug, randomized clinical trials stay
tdietterich · x · 2026-10-11
Oregon State emeritus professor Thomas Dietterich weighed in on whether AI-designed drugs need mechanistic understanding. He concedes we already take drugs we don't fully understand, but insists every drug still undergoes toxicity testing and randomized clinical trials. AI may someday guarantee zero toxicity and real efficacy, he says — but the technical risk is that AI could 'hack' the trial process itself if software runs it, so stronger cybersecurity for trial software is the answer.
