Why AI-era math funding will only grow: finite compute means asking the right questions matters
ctjlewis · x · 2026-10-11
Responding to a satirical call to defund math and physics after AI replaces everything, the author argues the opposite: math funding should rise in the short term. Since compute is always finite, humans allocate it by deciding which questions to ask models — and asking the right questions requires knowing the math. Conventional human mathematics therefore retains a lasting role.
