Google adds Code Comprehension interview round where candidates use Gemini on a 200-500 line codebase

Google has updated its engineering interview process with a new "Code Comprehension" round, widely read as the beginning of the end for LeetCode-style interviews. Candidates are dropped into a 200-500 line codebase with Gemini available, and evaluated on three things: reading someone else's code, debugging independently before reaching for AI, and catching when Gemini gets it wrong. The change signals that code comprehension and AI-collaboration judgment now matter more than algorithm recall in the age of agentic coding.
