Dev recreates employer Gitpod in 10 days, sparking debate on AI training data attribution
iamtrask · x · 2026-10-11
Developer Geoffrey Huntley claims he recreated his former employer Gitpod (recently acquired by OpenAI for a reported $450–500M) in under 10 days, planning an open-source, on-prem release. iamtrask notes the employer's old code was likely used to train frontier models, so the recreation may effectively be prompting the code out of the model — but without AI attribution tools, it's guesswork. He argues AI attribution is a big unsolved problem.
