Codex vs Claude Code: the quota reset economics and the optimal time to press
juntao · x · 2026-10-11
A new article by juntao compares how OpenAI Codex and Claude Code handle rate-limit resets:
- Claude Code's reset refills your quota for the current cycle; Codex's reset starts a new cycle. That one difference changes what each reset is worth.
- On both products, a reset loses value as your week runs out — resetting late in a cycle wastes the most.
Best strategy: identical for both — press reset the moment you hit your limit, and try to hit it early in the week.
Color: OpenAI's Codex lead Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux turned resets into a community ritual. The first mass reset came September 17, 2025, as an apology for gpt-5-codex launch slowness; by April 2026 he was doing it for fun, with millions of developers watching their quotas whenever he posts.
