Three agents burned $47.35 overnight: uncapped loop instructions are a billing trap

Developer aakashgupta woke up to $47.35 in agent charges and five auto-recharges on his OpenAI and Anthropic accounts — caused by his own instruction "repeat until done" with no cap. Three agents ran hundreds of turns overnight.
His fix: every brief now starts with a BUDGET line:
- OpenAI spend capped at $5 per script, $25 per day
- Each subagent quits at 150 tool calls or 60 minutes
In the quoted thread, a founder notes a startup raised $2M for an "enterprise data retrieval agent" that is just a vector DB, three OpenAI API calls in a loop, and a Postgres table — $14,000/month in API bills for what an indexed SQL query on a $20/month VPS could do, calling it the biggest compute-burning bubble in history.
