Surgical AI collaboration featured in NYT: GoNoGoNet flags go/no-go regions during surgery
BoWang87 · x · 2026-10-11
Bo Wang (former Chief AI Scientist at UHN) and surgeon Amin Madani's surgical AI collaboration is featured in the New York Times, highlighting GoNoGoNet, a model that predicts "go" and "no-go" regions in real time during surgery to assist surgeons.
The work builds on Wang's MedSAM project, which tackled medical image segmentation of organs and lesions; surgical AI extends that to helping surgeons interpret what they see as an operation unfolds. Surgeon Timothy Jackson proposed adding a third color — yellow — for cases where there isn't enough evidence to recommend an action, framing the next research challenge: knowing when not to advise.
