UK must not depend on foreign AI that can be switched off, says Alan Turing Institute head

George Williamson, new head of the UK's Alan Turing Institute, tells The Guardian that "national resilience" is a key ATI focus amid runaway US and Chinese AI leadership, arguing the UK must build its own AI rather than depend on foreign systems it can't inspect or that could be restricted or switched off.
He stresses that as AI embeds into defence, national security, critical infrastructure and healthcare, the UK shouldn't rely solely on systems beyond its control. The piece notes Washington temporarily blocked Anthropic's latest models from release outside the US in June. ATI, the UK's leading AI research body, is under government-driven strategic shift.
