Fixing Qwen Image 2.1 Turbo's grid artifacts with a custom sigma schedule; default starting sigma 1.0 may be the culprit

DevKkw · reddit · 2026-10-11

Qwen Image 2.1 Turbo ships with default sigmas 1.0, 0.978453, 0.95418, 0.926626, 0.89508, 0.845148, 0.704534, 0.414568, 0.0, which the author found produces heavy grid artifacts, washed skin and lost detail. Instead of swapping VAE or samplers, his fix is a custom sigma schedule:

0.9786, 0.9750, 0.9520, 0.8903, 0.7898, 0.6505, 0.4724, 0.2556, 0.0000

With it the grid effect is mostly gone and detail (skin especially) is more visible (tested at 2400x1792, 8 steps, ersde sampler, linear quadratic scheduler); it also works for image editing. He suspects the root cause is the starting sigma of 1.0 but says more experiments are needed, and rates overall quality as not top-tier — "like SD1.5 mixed with a modern CLIP" — though prompt adherence is very good.
