Toronto surgeons train AI to flag safe incision zones in real time during surgery

The New York Times reports on Toronto General Hospital's AI surgery project: a team led by Dr. Amin Madani is training a model that overlays green and red patches on live endoscopic footage, showing surgeons where it is and isn't safe to cut.
The effort is a flagship of Canada's push to improve health care with AI, aiming to make the model "think like the best surgeons." Colleague Dr. Timothy Jackson suggests adding a caution-yellow zone for areas that always require human judgment no algorithm has learned to mimic.
Eric Topol shared the piece as an example of Canada's medical AI innovation, including intraoperative guidance.
