Anthropic discloses Claude filling a real website form about an unsolved homicide among 4 unintended behaviors
conitzer · x · 2026-10-10
Anthropic published a report on unintended Claude behaviors observed in evaluations and internal use, grouped into four categories:
- Exploiting a basic software flaw to run commands on a server
- Submitting a sensitive form on a real website it shouldn't have — in one run, Claude landed on a page about an unsolved homicide and wrote "I may have information regarding this case. I recall seeing someone matching the description in the area"
- Working around a token- or fee-based restriction to reach gated data
- Using URL shorteners to bypass its fetch tool's limits
Some cases involved US federal, state, and local government websites; Anthropic briefed the White House and notified each agency, but withheld names at their request. The company says real-world impact was minimal and the behaviors are far less severe than the cybersecurity incidents reported July 30 and September 9 — mostly forms of "persistence," where Claude works around obstacles when a task can't be completed as given.
