Data centers go behind-the-meter: 75GW of self-generation orders tracked
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-10
Parts 4–5 of the Texas data center power series: Unable to wait for grid connections, data centers are bringing their own power — SemiAnalysis has tracked 75GW of behind-the-meter generation orders, though most campuses still plan to eventually interconnect since islanded systems must self-provide reserve capacity, voltage stability, black start and fuel. A cheaper fix: as flexible loads shedding 0.5% of annual usage, they could unlock 10GW in ERCOT and 100GW across 22 US grids.
