Shedding 0.5% of load could unlock ~100GW of US grid capacity
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-10
Parts 5–6 of the Texas data center power series: Making data centers flexible loads is the more practical fix — if large loads shed just 0.5% of annual grid usage, ERCOT could host 10GW more without new generation, scaling to nearly 100GW across 22 major US grids. Long term, hundreds of GW still need new supply: the US plans 86GW of new capacity this year (43.4GW solar, 24.3GW storage, 11.8GW wind, 6.3GW gas, 0 nuclear).
