Schmidhuber renews attack: none of core AI algorithms invented by Hinton
SchmidhuberAI · x · 2026-10-10
Jürgen Schmidhuber renews his attack on the 2024 Physics Nobel for Hopfield & Hinton, calling it a 'Nobel Prize for plagiarism' and citing his detailed tech report. He rebuts credit claims point by point: backprop dates to Linnainmaa 1970, Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (Boltzmann-like) models to 1975, distributed representations to Ivakhnenko & Lapa 1965, DBNs to Ivakhnenko's layer-by-layer training, and deep net pruning to 1971. 'None of the basic AI algorithms was invented by Hinton,' he says, noting Hinton's later surveys failed to cite the original inventors.
