DDR5 hits $7,200 for 256GB as engineers treat RAM as an appreciating AI asset

Ray Fernando says he's going all in on RAM: 256GB of DDR5 now costs $7,200 and prices may double within a year, making memory an "appreciating asset" for AI engineers.
His math: he burned over 70 billion tokens this month, and frontier models already cover his entire SWE workload. Buying a big config today means in 18 months he can train and run inference for that workflow at home forever, alongside his two DGX Sparks. The quoter jokes RAM supply will eventually be artificially controlled like diamonds to keep prices high.
