Claude Code subagent cache only lasts 5 minutes — one config tweak can save you money
daniel_mac8 · x · 2026-10-10
Daniel (@danielmac8) flags a costly gotcha for Claude Code users orchestrating subagents.
- The problem: subagent prompt cache lifespan in Claude Code defaults to just 5 minutes — if a subagent sits idle longer than that, you lose cache pricing and pay full price on subsequent calls.
- The fix: set "subagentPromptCacheTtl": 60 in your config to extend the TTL to 60 minutes.
A one-line change that can meaningfully cut costs for multi-agent workflows with longer scheduling gaps.
