One x16 slot drives 8 GPUs: blogger to benchmark PCIe switch expansion board P2P topologies
TheZachMueller · x · 2026-10-10
Developer @TheZachMueller shows off a GPU expansion board with two PCIe switches inside, letting a single x16 slot drive 8 GPUs (or two).
Two setup options:
- Direct connect: two PCIe x16-to-4x x8 MCIO cables, one per switch group
- Cascade: a single PCIe x16-to-2x x8 MCIO cable
The difference lies in P2P paths and bandwidth allocation between GPUs. Once the board arrives (early-mid next week), he'll benchmark as many lane combos as possible with his 9 GPUs — individual switch groups, combined, mixed direct-connect setups — and publish everything on GitHub.
