Three plugins to squeeze more token savings out of the Pi coding agent
solyarisoftware · x · 2026-10-10
A roundup of three plugins that further cut token usage in the Pi coding agent:
1. SoL-Pi (NVIDIA Research, MIT license, 3.4k GitHub stars)
- Installs on stock Pi without patching it: merges post-edit checks into one tool call, turns repeated long outputs into handles fetched on demand, and routes huge logs to a cheaper model
- Install: pi install git:...; all 4 mechanisms are off by default and must be enabled in sol-pi.; tested against Pi 0.85.1
2. pi-posthorse: swap context windows instead of summarizing
- Near the compaction threshold, prompts the model to record state in notes and opens a fresh context, skipping the summarization call; requires Pi 1.0.0+ and Node 24.12+
3. pi-bifrost: pick models per task
- Splits models into quick/general/frontier tiers you configure yourself; run /bifrost init after install
The author advises running a minimal task first to verify actual token savings before keeping any of these. The quoted post also covers Pi's new adaptive theme, which queries the terminal's colors at startup; official stats over 460+ Ghostty themes show only 60% of dark themes (and 25% of light ones) have brighter variants with sufficient contrast, so Pi keeps hue and adjusts only brightness.
