One $4k expansion board lets a single PCIe x16 slot drive up to 8 GPUs

- A teardown of a GPU expansion board with two internal PCIe switches shows a single x16 slot can now connect up to 8 GPUs.
- Two wiring options: direct connect via two x16-to-4x-x8 MCIO cables, or cascading through a single x16-to-2x-x8 MCIO setup — the difference is per-GPU bandwidth allocation.
- Cost breakdown: a $4k board plus a $200-300 retimer gets you 8 GPUs off one slot.
- The community is also discussing "double-cascading": running 3 of these boards so all 16 GPUs share one P2P plane.
