Fourier series draws any outline: how PathAnimator works under the hood
techartist_ · x · 2026-10-10
Math blogger matharium explains the math behind PathAnimator: any closed outline's coordinates can be expanded as real Fourier series, with the frequency-k sine/cosine terms acting as rotating arms whose intersection drives the pen. For a knight shape, the error is 30.2% of its height at N=1 harmonics (a pure ellipse) but drops to 0.70% at N=50. A new PathAnimator version with more features is teased.
