Earendil explains how Pi's new terminal theme samples colors and leans on contrast

sull · x · 2026-10-10

Earendil engineer Maximilian Blazek details Pi's new system theme (now the default): it queries the terminal for its colors and builds the UI theme from them, respecting each user's terminal customization.

Key insight: everything reduces to contrast. Once the user has picked terminal colors, every remaining decision is just "how much does this color stand out on its background?" But contrast is perceptual and hard to measure — the team built an interactive survey showing how people perceive it differently.

The post also explains why the ANSI 16-color palette can't be trusted directly: the underlying ECMA-48 standard dates to 1976 and imposes almost no real constraints on colors. Includes an interactive demo across 24 terminal themes.
